Critique

It was my greatest pleasure to judge Japanese Chin at Boston Championship show. Japanese Chin are my greatest passion. I wish to commend you all for the wonderful care you obviously provide to your much loved four legged friends. Each one without exception was so clean and were very healthy and most importantly happy. I think it’s important to note the international entry and winners I had on the day. My BOB was from the USA, Best Female from Italy and Best Puppy from Russia. UK Breeders/exhibitors are truly going above and beyond to introduce new blood and obtain the type they believe in. I believe the breed in the UK is in great hands, hats off to you all! Now for the critique. All dogs are Black/White unless otherwise mentioned.

Puppy Dog:

1st Mrs S Brown-Percival’s Itski Koidzumi De Imperium Auri (IMP RUS). I told his owner after judging, when I saw her dog walk into the ring, I said to myself “all you need to win is to have two testicles” , and thankfully he did! Let’s start with his head. It’s glorious! His eyes are a wonderfully large size, with a beautiful amount of white giving the trademark look of astonishment. Not squint or startled as some call it. There is a difference between astonished and scared. He posses the perfect amount of cushioning which is enhanced by his beautiful pink mouth. In an ideal world (which we don’t live in) his head would be larger but he is young and still developing. His shape and make is so elegant, with a perfect tail set. His Coat is of the correct silky texture and is single. Oh and did I mention his lovely hare feet! He is such a showman already. His beautiful hind angulation powered him around the ring. He looks like a doll and I really wish he was mine. His owner much receive such great pleasure just looking at him daily at home.

2nd Miss Tong Choya Tenby Of Jakconas. Longer in body than 1 and not the finish but so much to like. His head is superb. He has what I call a very “Japanese” face. By that I mean it’s so open, soft, fresh and inviting, he looks so Royal. He is elegant in shape and I feel with maturity he will really come into his own. He moved so confidently on his correct hare feet. Not a lot of coat today but he is a puppy and it’s not expected, but what was there was beautifully silky in texture.

Junior dog

1 Farmer’s Sangria Moon Walk .Oh WOW, he is SO SANGRIA. His clever breeder/owner/handler is one of my idols in our dog world since childhood. One of the best shapes of the day. So cobby he barely has a back. The back he does possess is well ribbed. Beautiful tail set, and possessing the chrysanthemum appearance. Such a lovely head and expression with nice cushioning. He has great width of underjaw and great nose placement giving him a wonderful side profile. His future is surely bright! He was a little unsure of things today but his beauty and type was much appreciated. There are many big green and red cards waiting for his name to be written on them in the future.

2 Mrs C E Partington-Palmers Littletigers Freak On A Leash. Longer in body than first. He showed so well for his handler and was presented in great condition.Great hind angulation which he used to power around the ring.Such a showman.Beautiful expressive eyes showing white in the inner corner.

Post Graduate Dog

Oh wow, what a class. It was my favorite of the day!

1st Mr & Mrs R D & M M, Mrs T & Mr B Mahony, Leatherwood’s - Haiku Hattori Hanzo Murraylake (Imp USA). My Star of the day! Okay, here goes. He entered my ring and screamed “it’s my ring, here I am now look at me.” I heard him! His shape is spectacular! So short in back with beautiful length of neck, he creates a wonderful square picture of elegance. His head is so large yet he is not a large dog. He is handsome, you make no mistake when looking at his head, he is a male. His eyes are large, round and so very dark showing white in the inner corner. His cushioning is just right, not too much and not too little. He has a super reverse figure 3 head profile when viewed from the side. He has elegant yet strong bone. His hair is cool to the touch, not because he is cold but because it is the correct silky texture and single, allowing air to freely pass through and the coat to breathe. He has a lot of hair but it is not double coated in any way.The coat is beautifully feathered all over his body in all of the right places and was so clean. Beautifully set tail which is so well feathered, it too is chrysanthemum in appearance. As if the above was not enough he is supported by 4 beautiful hare feet with feathering. He has super hind angulation and for sure put it to work as he powered around my ring (sorry,I mean his ring). Please don’t refer to him a red and white, he is of course sable, a lemon sable at that and the best lemon sable I have ever seen. He’s not an easy dog to show by any means. He made his handler work. His movement is excellent when he controls his excitement. He has wonderful lift/election in front (not hackney) but sometimes he tries to go too fast, looses control and looks untidy. At one point I asked myself “how bad would it look if I asked if I could move him around the ring myself to tire him out.?” Thankfully I talked myself out of that idea! Luckily he got tired as the day went on and by the Best Male challenge and Best of Breed challenge he glided around the ring like he was walking around a palace. Another I wish was mine.

2 Farmers Sangria De Ja Vous You know when you read a judge write “I wish I had two first place awards in this class” and you think-yeah, yeah, yeah... well sorry not sorry but I’m going to say it, I wish I had an extra first place card to give him too. Just like his kennel mates he is as square as can be and so well constructed. This dog is made so correctly that he cannot stand wrong. Lovely round head with excellent nose placement and beautiful eyes. Presented to perfection as all are from this kennel. He will have his day as the star of the show, there is no question. When he wins big, which I’m sure he will and if I am there I will cheer the loudest in celebration as he deserves each and every accolade he receives.

Open dog

1st Tongs Sleepyhollow Rheingold. Red Sable Dog and one I have admired over the years. I have an even greater love for him after getting my hands on him. Fabulously square in appearance, possessing a beautiful rib cage. His super owner/handler keeps him in wonderful condition, he is so attentive to her, never taking his eyes off of her. He has so much beautiful cushioning with great width of underjaw. He had nice layback of shoulder with beautiful neck length. Beautiful large, dark and round eyes showing white in the inner corner. Moved around the ring with great confidence. Slightly heavier in bone than my winner but still possess an elegant appearance. He is just an alround beautiful dog.

2nd Farmers Sangria Pamojill Private Eye .Another incredibly beautiful Chin from this kennel. Like his kennel mates mentioned above he possess beautiful-make, shape, type and breed detail he’s got it all. I adored his look of astonishment. Shown in glorious condition. His day will come.

Special Beginners Dog

1st Tarabads Tillashbys Nick Is In A Twist At Frondil JW. 3rd in post Graduate Dog also. As I only critiqued 1st and 2nd in each class I was going to make exception for this beautiful dog and then he won first in this class. His headpiece is Magnificent. The best of the day. It is large and so round. His eyes are the very definition of astonished. Not too much and certainly not too little white giving the characteristic look of astonishment. He has a glorious head side profile also. If that wasn’t enough he is also marked beautifully too. Excellent width of underjaw. His size is perfection for me. His Coat was a beautiful silky texture. He moved well but in the Post Graduate class he was not so happy and did not want to show off his beauty. He is clearly much loved by his handler and they share a beautiful bond. I think both will go on to great things in our breed. When he came back in to challenge for best special beginner he was much happier and I had no hesitation in awarding him Best Special Beginner in breed.I hope one day I get to judge him again when he is in the mood to show off his beauty.

Puppy Bitch

What a greatly exciting class that proves that the breed is going strong in the right direction. All ladies here without exception where so happy and enjoying their day. (the dogs that is, but all of the handlers seemed happy also.)

1st Flynn’s Sharlarna Delicious. What a darling baby. She is so confident and sure of herself. Yes, she knows she is beautiful. She looks at you with her astonished expression and says “ well, when are you going to hand me the 1st place card? ”. Great body shape/make. She is so young but everything just fits and pleases the eye. She moves confidently when she decides she wants to. Presented in tip top condition like all of her kennel mates.

2nd Cranes Cranvarl Ruby Tuesday. Okay little lady, we understood you didn’t like the floor. We got the message you’d rather be on the catwalks of Milan and Paris and quite frankly you are more than beautiful enough to strut your stuff there. Superb make and shape, such a square and balanced body. Great single coat of correct silky texture. Tail set is just beautiful. She May have had beautiful hare feet but she just didn’t want to use them to walk. You will have your day my dear, when you decide a show ring can be just as fun as a catwalk!

Junior Bitch

1st Mrs S Brown-Percival’s Littletigers Grace By Sandiman JW. What an exciting lady!! Super front. Not a lot of body coat today but for me that doesn’t matter. She possessed beautiful silky feathering in all of the right places! Her coat was of lovely texture. She had a superb look of astonishment, enhanced by her big round dark eyes. Great bone. Excellent lenght of neck helping to create her elegant picture. She is nicely proportioned for a female at this moment. I can’t wait to see her when her chest drops and body develops more. I think she will only get more beautiful with maturity. So well schooled by her talented owner/handler. I really think she will do it all for you, both in and out of the ring. Delighted to award her Best Bitch and Best Of Opposite Sex.

2nd Ms Clarke-Tismechi Lady Orchid. Not as happy as 1 but lots to like. Another with a great front. Nice shape/balance and her little coat on the day was beautifully silky.

Post Graduate Bitch

1st Mrs L A Flynn’s Linjato Mishiko. Let me use this time to say this exhibitor really presents all of her dogs in first class condition. They are all a credit to you and this girl is no exception. Such a lovely girl with beautiful nose and eye placement. Eyes where large, dark and round showing white. She moved and showed so well for her owner. An exciting girl who I’m sure will go onto great things.

2nd Mrs J K Allit Sharlarna Pink Fizz. Really beautiful shape and size. Not the coat of winner but her coat was single and silky to the touch. She showed so well for her handler, a born show girl. Lovely typical headpiece that I always associate with this kennel.

Open bitch

I really liked the bitches in this class.

1st Mr A Paradise Shardlow Knickerboka Glory SHCM.This girl was born to show, she just loves the ring. So attentive to her talented handler, she stood so square and picture perfect. She possess a nicely rounded head with dark eyes that showed the desired look of astonishment. She has excellent rib which just adds to her overall cobbyness. Moved well.

2nd Mrs J K Allitt Tillashby Hidenka. Longer in body than 1 and not in full coat but I liked her so much. Although not in full coat, the all important feathering she had was beautifully silky and single. Her eyes are her crowning glory. So round and dark showing astonishment. Moved well.

Special Beginner Bitch

1st Miss M J D Evans-Evansly Erika.Lemon and White. One of the squarest bitches of the day! Glorious hare feet with feathering. Great length of leg which added to her bodies balance. Her eyes where so round and dark, like two pools you could fall into if not careful. Not a great deal of coat on the day but what was there was of excellent texture. Wonderfully set tail which was absolutely chrysanthemum in appearance.
